Complete Guide: Chemical Reactions & Equations |
(Reactants)
(Products)
(Law of Conservation of Mass)
(Combination)
(Decomposition)
(CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂)
(Displacement)
Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu
(Double Displacement)
Na₂SO₄ + BaCl₂ → BaSO₄ + 2NaCl
(Oxidation & Reduction)
(Corrosion)
(Rancidity)
Chemical Reactions & Equations
Class 10 Science - Chapter 1 Complete Guide (Simplified)
1. What is a Chemical Reaction?
When one or more substances react with each other to form new substances with completely new properties, it is called a Chemical Reaction. It cannot be easily reversed (it is a permanent change).
Reactants
The substances that take part in a chemical reaction are called reactants. They are always written on the Left side of the arrow ($\rightarrow$).
Products
The new substances formed after the completion of the reaction are called products. They are written on the Right side of the arrow.
$$2Mg + O_2 \rightarrow 2MgO$$ (Here Mg and O₂ are reactants, and MgO is the product)
2. Balancing Chemical Equations
Can we leave an equation just like that? No! We have to balance it. This is done because of the Law of Conservation of Mass.
3. Types of Chemical Reactions
1. Combination Reaction
When two or more reactants combine to form a single new product.
Example: Burning of coal (C + O₂ → CO₂)
2. Decomposition Reaction
The opposite of combination! When a single reactant breaks down to give two or more products.
Example: Breakdown of limestone (CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂)
3. Displacement Reaction
When a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.
Example: Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu
4. Double Displacement
A reaction in which there is an exchange of ions between the reactants.
Example: Na₂SO₄ + BaCl₂ → BaSO₄ + 2NaCl
4. Oxidation & Reduction
This is a very important part of chemistry, often combined and called Redox reactions.
- Oxidation: The addition of oxygen (O₂) to a substance or the removal of hydrogen (H₂) from a substance.
- Reduction: The addition of hydrogen (H₂) to a substance or the removal of oxygen (O₂) from a substance.
When one reactant gets oxidized while the other gets reduced during a reaction, such reactions are called Oxidation-Reduction Reactions or Redox Reactions.
5. Effects of Oxidation in Everyday Life
Corrosion
When a metal is attacked by substances around it such as moisture, acids, etc., it is said to corrode. This process is called corrosion.
Examples: Rusting of iron, black coating on silver, and green coating on copper. It is prevented by painting or galvanization.
Rancidity
When fats and oils are oxidized (left open for a long time), they become rancid, and their smell and taste change.
Prevention: Bags of potato chips are flushed with Nitrogen gas to prevent the chips from getting oxidized!
